In the committee meeting co-directors will oversee certain responsibilities for the ASL ROCKS! event on April 17, 2010. Co-directors are required to attend this meeting to collect information they need to complete their duties.

The required co-directors are listed as following:

*Interpreters will be provided during the meeting.

*Snacks at the meeting are ok, however please clean up after yourself.

Dr. Bobbie Beth Scoggins
 President, National Association of the Deaf

Chief Operations Officer, Communication Services for the Deaf

Born deaf within a culturally deaf family, Dr. Bobbie Beth Scoggins graduated from Texas School for the Deaf, attended Gallaudet, then transferred to California State University at Northridge for her Masters and obtained her doctoral degree at Pepperdine University. She served as administrator of a drug and alcohol recovery center before relocating to become the Executive Director of the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Bobbie served as President of the USA Deaf Sports Federation from 1998 to 2005 and is admired nationwide for her career as an actress. Along with her business success, she has been recognized by many professional and philanthropic organizations for her achievements.

Bobbie has received many awards from organizations for which she served, but one of her most recent accomplishments was to carry the Olympic flame representing the deaf and hard of hearing community for the 2004 Olympic Games. She served as NAD Region II representative before her election to NAD President in 2006.

Currently, Bobbie is the Chief Operations Officer of Communication Services for the Deaf (CSD) in Sioux Falls, SD.

Mark Angel Morales

ASL Performance Artist

Deaf/International Sign Language Interpreter

Mark Angel Morales grew up near East Los Angeles, California. He grew up as a Deaf Mexican/Aztec in a hearing family. He attended Gallaudet University in 1979 and has worked as a professional free-lance interpreter for 17 years. A La Puente native, he is nationally respected as a Deaf Interpreter and International Sign Interpreter.

Mark is a dedicated Deaf entertainer, internationally known for his “One Deaf Aztec Man Show”, a show with an emphasis on ASL and International Sign storytelling. He has entertained countless numbers with his performances.

Mark has played a strong role in various ASL projects. As an ASL Storyteller, he participated in the development of videotapes and CDs about Deaf Culture and Visual Arts.

Mark was a member of 2001 and 2005 USA Men’s Volleyball Team. He participated as a Libero player in Roma, Italy (June 2001) and in Melbourne, Australia (Jan 2005).

Dr. Byron Bridges

Professor, Austin Community College

Operation Manger, CSD of Texas Interim Interpreting

Born deaf to deaf parents, and with a deaf sister, Dr. Byron Bridges has used ASL for his first language throughout his life.  He attended two different deaf schools as well as attended public schools. Byron obtained his Bachelors of Arts (BA) degree in Deaf Studies, his Masters of Arts (MA) degree in Linguistics and earned his doctoral degree (Ed. D) in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education degree at Lamar University.

Because of his love in language and culture, Byron has been involved himself in deaf sports, deaf clubs, deaf fishing organizations, and state/national organizations of the deaf most of his life. Byron has also co-authored and published the book, Deaf Tend Yours. In addition, he has written scripts and produced many deaf-related videotapes/DVD.  Byron is a nationally-known teacher and lecturer in ASL and sign language interpretation. He has been in the field of ASL linguistics, interpreting and university/college teaching of ASL as a second language for thirty years.  Byron is currently a certified deaf interpreter (CDI) through the national organization, Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Byron currently teaches for Austin Community College in the Interpreting Preparation Program and has been a visiting professor of ASL/Deaf Studies at Lamar University.

Kim Powers

President, Texas Deaf-Blind Association

Born deaf, at the age of 11 Powers contracted retinitis pigmentosa, a form of tunnel vision that gradually took her sight and left her legally blind in 1990. She became an amateur actress and was discovered when one of Kaleidoscope’s top executives saw her performing with a San Antonio theater company. In the spring of 1996, Powers co-hosted the syndicated TV special “Helen Keller: The Magic Within,” together with a team of big-name celebrities. She was also scheduled to host the Paralympic Games for physically disabled athletes in Atlanta in August 1996 on KTV.

Kim also hosted of the Emmy Award winning television talk show series, “Kim’s World,” on San Antonio-based Kaleidoscope cable network, reaching out to nearly 20 million people in more than 35 states (founded 1990). She had traveled extensively, enjoys outdoor sports and activities from horseback riding to bungee jumping, and has presented nationally and internationally on issues that affect people with disabilities.

Kim currently serves as a board member on Deaf-Blind Service Center of Austin.

I am always in the middle between hearing and deaf cultures. I talk sometimes and I sign sometimes. To appreciate and preserve my sign language skills is something I would like to do this year. Be creative!
